Local Assembly and Supply Chain Development
Strengthening Regional Production Ecosystems
Latin America is developing local manufacturing and supply-chain capacity to support the rapid growth of compact electric truck fleets. According to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and CAF–Development Bank of Latin America, local assembly operations expanded by 27 percent between 2022 and 2025. This growth reflects the region’s strategy to increase industrial autonomy, reduce import dependency, and accelerate technology transfer.

Brazil has become a production hub, hosting facilities for BYD, Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus, and Higer Motors. These companies assemble battery-electric trucks under national industrial policies that prioritize low-carbon manufacturing. In Mexico, the Programa de Producción Regional Sostenible promotes public–private partnerships with JAC Motors, Navistar, and local component suppliers. Meanwhile, Colombia’s Medellín and Chile’s Antofagasta have developed logistics clusters dedicated to the assembly and servicing of compact urban trucks.
Moreover, governments are linking local content requirements to industrial incentives. As a result, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are integrating into value chains that supply electrical components, cooling systems, and electronic controllers. Training programs led by national industrial institutes ensure consistent quality standards and technical skills across production sites.
This regionalization of manufacturing enhances competitiveness while advancing sustainability goals. By localizing production and strengthening supply chains, Latin America is building the industrial foundation for its clean-mobility transformation.
