Dust Suppression and Environmental Systems
Enhancing Urban Air Quality Through Targeted Spraying
Dust suppression systems have become vital to Latin America’s urban environmental management agenda. These systems reduce particulate matter in industrial zones, mining corridors, and construction areas, helping cities meet stricter air-quality standards. According to CAF–Development Bank of Latin America and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), regional investment in dust-suppression equipment exceeded USD 640 million between 2022 and 2025.

Brazil’s Programa Nacional de Controle de Polvo Urbano introduced high-efficiency nozzles and automated spray bars in public sanitation fleets. As a result, airborne dust concentrations in major cities like Belo Horizonte and Fortaleza dropped by up to 30 percent. In Mexico, the Plan Integral de Calidad del Aire implemented water-spraying systems in industrial parks and urban highways, cutting PM10 emissions by 22 percent. Chile, Peru, and Colombia have replicated these results through localized control programs in mining and construction zones.
The technology behind these systems is evolving rapidly. IoT-based monitoring now synchronizes spraying schedules with environmental sensors, ensuring optimal dust control with minimal water use. In Argentina, pilot projects in Córdoba employ AI-assisted models that adjust spray duration based on wind and humidity conditions.
Furthermore, environmental agencies are incorporating dust suppression into climate-adaptation strategies. This integration reinforces public health and promotes cleaner, safer urban environments. Through these initiatives, Latin America is setting new operational benchmarks for sustainable and data-driven environmental management.
