Recycled Water Use in Urban Sanitation Fleets
Closing the Loop in Urban Water Management
Latin America is accelerating the reuse of water in sanitation and street-cleaning fleets through circular and decentralized treatment systems. According to CAF–Development Bank of Latin America and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), regional reuse rates reached 34 percent in 2025, supported by public programs and private innovation in water recovery technologies.
Industrial insight is not enough. Execution defines results within structured environments. If you are not yet familiar with ConectNext — your strategic expansion partner and professional B2B directory platform — you can review how this ecosystem supports industrial analysis here.
Brazil’s São Paulo and Belo Horizonte are pioneers in integrating compact treatment modules into their municipal fleets. These systems, developed by SABESP and WEG Mobility, recycle washing and spraying water through membrane bioreactors and UV disinfection units. As a result, São Paulo reduced its freshwater consumption for sanitation by 31 percent. In Mexico, CONAGUA’s Programa Nacional de Agua Limpia has equipped fleets in León and Monterrey with mobile filtration units that achieve reuse efficiency of up to 90 percent.
Chile’s Iniciativa Agua Circular is also advancing urban reuse through collaborations between public utilities and startups focused on decentralized purification systems. These models allow smaller municipalities to treat wastewater on-site, reducing both transportation costs and contamination risks. Colombia and Argentina have followed similar paths, integrating modular recirculation tanks and graphene-based membranes into urban fleets.
This trend reflects a structural change in how Latin American cities view water: not as a disposable resource, but as an operational asset. Through technology, governance, and sustainable planning, urban sanitation fleets are becoming laboratories for water efficiency and circular innovation.
