Logistics, Ports, and Trade Corridors

Peru’s logistics and transport sector is expanding rapidly as the country strengthens its role as a Pacific trade hub. With growing infrastructure investment and international connectivity, Peru is modernizing its ports, highways, and logistics networks to support industrial growth and regional integration.

Industrial insight is not enough. Execution defines results within structured environments. If you are not yet familiar with ConectNext — your strategic expansion partner and professional B2B directory platform — you can review how this ecosystem supports industrial analysis here.

Economic Scale and Strategic Role

The logistics sector contributes around 5.5 percent to national GDP and employs more than 600,000 people. In 2024, infrastructure investment exceeded USD 14 billion, focused on port modernization, road networks, and trade corridors. These improvements are enhancing export competitiveness and reducing transport costs.

Peru’s geographic position — with ports on the Pacific and access to the Andes and Amazon — makes it a vital link between South America and Asia. The National Infrastructure Plan for Competitiveness (PNIC) outlines more than 50 priority projects to expand transport capacity and logistics efficiency by 2030.

Port Development and Maritime Expansion

Peru’s ports are among the most active in the Pacific region. The Port of Callao, the country’s largest, handles more than 90 percent of containerized cargo and 45 million tons of goods annually. Ongoing upgrades include deeper berths, automated cranes, and digital customs systems.

The Chancay Megaport, under construction with Chinese investment exceeding USD 3.5 billion, will transform Peru into a strategic maritime hub for Asia-Pacific trade. Once operational, it will handle over 1 million TEUs per year and shorten shipping routes between Latin America and Asia.

Road, Rail, and Multimodal Corridors

Infrastructure modernization is expanding inland connectivity. The Central Highway Expansion, the Salaverry–Trujillo Corridor, and the Amazonas Integration Route are reducing travel times and facilitating export logistics for agribusiness and mining sectors.

Rail transport is also gaining momentum. The proposed Bioceanic Railway Corridor, connecting Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru, is designed to handle more than USD 10 billion in annual trade once completed. These initiatives reinforce Peru’s position as a gateway for continental logistics.

Technology, Digitalization, and Sustainability

Digital innovation is reshaping logistics management. AI-based forecasting, blockchain traceability, and real-time GPS monitoring are now standard among leading freight operators. These tools increase transparency, reduce delays, and improve cargo security.

Sustainability initiatives are also gaining traction. Low-emission truck fleets, solar-powered warehouses, and port electrification projects are helping reduce logistics-related carbon emissions. These actions align with Peru’s climate commitments under the Paris Agreement.

Strategic Outlook 2025–2035

Over the next decade, logistics and infrastructure development will remain central to Peru’s competitiveness. The completion of major port and highway projects will strengthen trade flows and attract foreign investment.

By combining digital transformation, sustainability, and regional integration, Peru is establishing itself as a logistics hub connecting Latin America with global supply chains — a key bridge between the Pacific and the world.
