Agroindustry and Export Dynamics in Paraguay

Agriculture and agroindustry remain the backbone of Paraguay’s economy. The sector represents more than 20 percent of GDP and accounts for nearly 40 percent of total exports. Paraguay’s fertile land, stable macroeconomic policies, and expanding processing industries sustain its competitiveness across regional and global markets.

Production and Export Structure

In 2024, Paraguay exported USD 8.9 billion in agricultural and agroindustrial products. Soybeans, beef, maize, and rice remain top commodities. Soybean complex exports alone exceeded USD 4 billion, positioning the country as the world’s fourth-largest soybean exporter.

The meat industry has also expanded, with exports surpassing 460,000 tons in 2024. Key destinations include Chile, Brazil, Taiwan, and the European Union.

Agroindustrial Development and Value Addition

The government is promoting greater industrialization through investments in food processing and bioenergy. New soybean crushing and biodiesel plants are operating in Alto Paraná and Itapúa. These projects enhance export value and create skilled employment in rural areas.

Logistics upgrades, such as the Bioceanic Corridor and new river terminals, improve access to ports and trade routes.

Technology and Sustainability

Precision agriculture and digital monitoring systems are improving yields and reducing costs. Local startups and cooperatives are adopting satellite imagery, drones, and automated irrigation systems to optimize resource use.

Sustainability is also advancing through certification schemes and traceability standards, ensuring compliance with global environmental requirements.

Institutional Support and Policy Framework

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) and Red de Inversiones y Exportaciones (REDIEX) support diversification and export promotion. Fiscal incentives encourage agribusiness modernization and renewable energy use in production chains.

Public–private partnerships continue to strengthen Paraguay’s role in global food security and sustainable agribusiness.

Strategic Outlook 2025–2035

Between 2025 and 2035, Paraguay’s agroindustry will focus on sustainability, innovation, and higher value-added exports. The combination of technology, logistics, and environmental responsibility will consolidate its leadership in regional food supply chains.

Paraguay’s competitive agroindustrial ecosystem will remain a key engine for inclusive and sustainable growth.
