According to CAF–Development Bank of Latin America and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), 40 percent of conventional oils used in municipal fleets have been replaced with biodegradable alternatives since 2022. Modern biodegradable lubricants are based on synthetic esters and plant-derived compounds designed to operate under high mechanical stress while maintaining optimal performance. Their adoption also simplifies waste management, as used fluids can be processed in circular recovery facilities without toxic residues.
Regional Adoption
Brazil’s EcoLub Project coordinates 18 municipal fleets that fully transitioned to biodegradable hydraulic fluids and gear oils. Mexico’s Programa de Lubricación Verde promotes green procurement policies for maintenance contracts across 12 states. Chile’s Infraestructura Limpia Sustentable integrates fluid replacement into its carbon-reduction agenda. Colombia’s Eficiencia Verde initiative trains maintenance teams in the correct handling of biodegradable products, while Argentina and Peru are implementing CAF-supported pilots in medium-sized municipalities to phase out petroleum-based lubricants.
These initiatives demonstrate measurable improvements in air and water quality, alongside reductions in maintenance waste disposal costs of up to 25 percent.
