Preparing the Workforce for a Smarter Sanitation Era
Latin America is strengthening its human capital to meet the growing technological demands of modern sanitation systems. As cities digitize their operations, the workforce must adapt to new tools, automation processes, and sustainability standards. According to CAF–Development Bank of Latin America and the International Labour Organization (ILO), over 42,000 sanitation professionals have completed certified training programs in digital operation, maintenance, and safety between 2022 and 2025.

Brazil’s Serviço Nacional de Aprendizagem Industrial (SENAI) leads this effort with specialized courses on robotics maintenance, telemetry management, and renewable-powered equipment. In Mexico, the Consejo Nacional de Normalización y Certificación de Competencias Laborales (CONOCER) offers certification programs focused on smart-fleet operation and digital diagnostics. Chile and Colombia have also launched e-learning platforms for municipal workers, emphasizing IoT data use, sustainability reporting, and energy management.
These training programs go beyond technical skills. They foster a culture of operational safety, environmental awareness, and continuous improvement. In Argentina and Peru, public–private cooperation has allowed the creation of local training centers that connect workforce development with smart-city innovation agendas.
